GURU GRANTH SAHIB, THE SHABAD GURU AND KHALSA PANTH
By Kuldeep Singh
President, Sikh Youth Federation of USA
Ex – Chairperson, World Sikh Council – America Region

Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the present Guru of the Sikhs is perhaps the only Holy Scripture of any religion which was compiled by the founders of the faith themselves. Its first compilation, the Aad Granth Sahib is preserved to this day in its original form at Kartarpur in district Jullunder, Punjab. Under the direction of the fifth Nanak, Guru Arjan Sahib, the Aad Sri Granth Sahib was scribed by Bhai Gurdas ji and authenticated by the fifth Guru himself. According to the Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a platter of spiritual food consisting of three important elements for human consumption.

– Guru Granth Sahib pg 1429

The elements are – Truth, concord with Truth and the way to that Concord. The basis of all the three is Naam (Name, ref. God). They are most essential to quench the thirst, or need, of human beings. The entire world is lost in darkness and does not know the importance of following God’s Path. Sri Guru Granth Sahib provides them the food of divine knowledge and show them the path that will take them across this ocean of materialistic world.

Shabad Guru from the beginning:

Beginning with the first Nanak, Guru Nanak Sahib, it was emphasized that the Shabad or Baanee (word) is the true guide (Guru) and not the body, or the physical form. The following conversation between the Sidhas and Guru Nanak as recorded in the Baanee entitled Sidh Gosht in Sri Guru Granth Sahib provides a clear example:

What is the origin of life and what time did it all begin? Who is your Guru of whom you are a disciple? How do you stay aloof from the influence of Maya and ego? Listen young boy and answer our question. Elaborate on this question – the Shabad (word) is instrumental in taking us across the ocean of Maya?

Life began with the breath of life and the time it started following the instructions of the True Guru. The Shabad (word) is the Guru and an attentive mind attuned to it is the disciple. I stay aloof from the influence of Maya by staying in touch with the inexplicable story of the Creator. After attaining, a thorough understanding of the Shabad (word) and acting upon its guidance the fire of ego is extinguished.

Just as Guru Nanak Sahib considers Shabad as Guru, the second Nanak – Guru Angad Sahib also gives utmost importance to the Gurshabad in his Baanee:

Even though ego is a chronic disease, it is definitely curable. Its cure is to act upon the Guru’s Word by the Grace of Waheguru-Akalpurakh (God). Nanak says this is the way to get rid of this trouble.

This pattern is the same throughout Sri Guru Granth Sahib. All the Gurus have similarity of thought. This is observed even by the eleven Bhatts (The seekers of Truth) who visited the Guru Darbar during the times of Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Nanak. They found no difference between the other successive Gurus. Their words are:

joiq rUip hir Awip gurU nwnku khwXau ] qw qy AMgdu BXau qq isau qqu imlwXau ]
AMgid ikrpw Dwir Amru siqguru iQru kIAau ] Amrdwis Amrqu CqRü gur rwmih dIAau ]
gur rwmdws drsnu pris kih mQurw AMimRq bXx ] mUriq pMc pRmwx purKu guru Arjunu ipKhu nXx ] 1 ]

The spirit of God Almighty was called Guru Nanak. The same spirit became Angad just like the merger of two elements. Angad became merciful and granted Guruship to Amardas. Amardas handed over the umbrella of Amrit (Naam) to Ramdas. After coming to the sanctuary of Guru Ramdas, Mathura has these golden words to say. See with your own eyes Guru Arjan as the fifth body of Guru Nanak.

The words “Shabad” and “Surat” are so important and significant in Sikh religion that Bhai Gurdas ji used them so frequently in his “Vaars”. In his Vaar # 3 given below, he used these words five times:

ñù॥

Baanee came from Waheguru through the Gurus

That Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the Divine Word revealed to the Gurus by God Almighty is clear from the following quotations:

O’ Lalo! I simply pass on the Word of God as it is revealed to me by Him

I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to speak. I conveyed whatever is told to me.

O’ Sikhs of the Guru, Always consider the Words coming out of the mouth of True Guru as Absolute Truth as they are revealed to him by Almighty God Himself.

gur mih Awp smoie sbdu vrqwieAw ] – gurU gRMQ swihb 1279

Being present in the Guru, God Himself made His Word available to salvage the humankind.

The Aad Granth and its Structure

Guru Arjan Sahib collected all the Baanee that was in his possession and assigned Bhai Gurdas ji the task of a scribe to compile it in a specific order and into a Granth. A secluded place outside the city of Amritsar – Ramsar (Gurdwara) was selected for this purpose. The compilation was completed on August 2, 1604 and the Granth came to be known as the Aad Granth. The sacred Beerh (Bound volume) of Aad Sri Granth Sahib was installed at Sri Harmandar Sahib on August 16, 1604. The Guru, himself sat with the Sangat (members of the congregation). According to Gurbilaas Patshahi Chheveen, he addressed the Sangat:

Listen carefully to my words that are full of truth. Treat the Granth as the Guru and make no distinction between the two, The Granth and the Guru.

At night, The Aad Sri Granth Sahib Ji was taken to Kotha Sahib and the Sukhasan was done placed in apposition of rest or repose) on the bed where Guru Arjan Sahib used to sleep. The Guru, himself slept on the floor, thus paying greater respect to the Gurshabad/Baanee.

ADDITION TO THE AAD SRI GRANTH SAHIB, THE KARTARPURI BEERH:

In the year 1704, the tenth Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh ji directed Bhai Mani Singh ji to rewrite the Beerh with the following additions to the Aad Granth at a place known as Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib:

• The Baanee of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the ninth Nanak, (Mehla Nauvaan) that included his Shabads in Raag Jaijawanti, a Raag in which no other Guru has written any Shabad, was added.
• Added the following four additional Shabads that existed on pages 281- 323 of Aad Granth Sahib to the Sodar – Rehraas Sahib:
• Raag Aasaa Mehla Chautha, So Purakh
• Aasa Mehla Chautha
• Aasa Mehla Pehla
• Aasa Mehla Panjvaan

He declared this new version of Aad Granth to be the Guru of the Sikhs in 1708 at Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib

This Beerh is called Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Baanee contained in it is in 31 Raags by first five Gurus, the ninth Guru, and the approved Baanee of 5 Bhagats, 11 Bhatts and three other important persons. Although the contributors of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji came from diverse backgrounds, there is uniformity in the message. It provides general guidelines to a seeker of Truth. Mr. Duncan Greenlees, the author of “The Gospel of Guru Granth Sahib” has these words to say:

“Among the world’s Scriptures few, if any, attain so high a literary level or so constant a height of inspiration…… The more I dug into the pages of Guru Granth, the more I fell in love with them.”

After reading the English translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib by Dr. Gopal Singh, the Nobel Laureate, Ms. Pearl S. Buck has the following significant comments:

“I have studied the scriptures of other great religions, but I do not find elsewhere the same power of appeal to the heart and mind as I find here in these volumes……….There is something strangely modern about these scriptures and this puzzled me until I learned that they are in fact comparatively modern, compiled as late as the 16th century when explorers were beginning to discover that the globe, upon which we all live, is a single entity divided only by arbitrary lines of our own making. Perhaps this sense of unity is the source of power I find in these volumes. They speak to person of any religion or of none. They speak for the human heart and the searching mind.”

Guruship to the Aad Sri Granth Sahib

When the tenth Nanak Guru Gobind Singh left his human body to merge his soul with Waheguru-Akalpurakh, his words as interpreted by various historians and poets were:

On the third day when the Guru stood in the midst of the Sangat, all the Sikhs met him with folded hands and made the following request to him. You have made up your mind to leave the world. Who will take care of the needs of the Sangat?

After listening to the request of the Sangat the merciful Guru replied: I am granting Guruship to such a person, who is the greatest of all. After saying these words, he had the “Parkash” of Guru Granth Sahib. He then placed five paisey (copper coins) and a coconut in front of the Granth. A Deg of Karah Parshad (traditionally a sweet pudding for distribution to Sangat after seeking Guru’s acceptance)) was prepared for distribution to all. He then addressed the Sikhs:

All the Gurus from Nanak to Gobind Singh have the (same) spirit of Almighty God in them. And the same spirit is now present in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Khalsa Panth was established by the orders of God. The entire Sikh Nation is hereby ordered to consider the Granth as the Guru. Consider the body of Guru Granth Ji as the body of all the Gurus. Any one who wishes to have union with God may find Him in the Shabad contained in Guru Granth Sahib.

Any one who wishes to talk to me may do so by reciting, listening and understanding the Granth Ji. Those who have a desire to listen to my words may do so by reading and listening to the Granth Ji from the bottom of one’s heart.

My shape and form is Granth Ji and that there is no flaw in this statement. My third form is those Sikhs, who are drenched in Gurbaanee all the time.

Listen to me carefully O’ Nand Lal. I have a total of three forms – Nirgun, Sargun and the Word.

O Lord! You are planning to leave the world. Advise us as to where should we bow our head?
Recite the Baani of all the Gurus and follow the code of conduct that was given to you.

From now on consider Guru Granth Sahib as my true form. If you want to talk to me, you should recite Aad Guru Granth Sahib. This is the way to talk to me.

A detailed evidence of installing the Aad Sri Granth Sahib as ‘Guru” is found in the Bhatt Vahis of Thanesar in the following words:

Guru Gobind Singh ji, the Tenth Guru, son of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, grandson of Guru Hargobind ji, great-grandson of Guru Arjun ji, belonging to the family of Guru Ramdas ji, Surajbansi Gosal clan, Sodhi, Khatri, resident of Anandpur, Parganah Kahlur, now at Nanderh, in the country of Godavri in Deccan(Southern region of South Asia) asked Bhai Daya Singh, on Wednesday, the Chauth of Katrik month, shukla Pakh, samvat 1765 (October 6, 1708) to bring Sri Granth Sahib. Upon receiving orders Daya Singh brought Sri Granth Sahib. Guru ji placed five paisey and a coconut before it (Sri Guru Granth Sahib) and bowed his head. He addressed the Sangat thus: “This is my order to you. Consider Sri Granth Ji as the Guru in my place. Any Sikh who will acknowledge this shall be rewarded. The Guru will stand by his/her side.” He emphasized that these words are true.”

Some of the Unique features of Guru Granth Sahib

1. A POWERFUL STATEMENT SUPPORTING DEPRESSED CLASSES;

• Those (who are considered) belonging to the lowermost caste as well those, who belong to the lowest of the lowermost caste
Nanak stands by them and shall never be close to those, who are “great people” because of their materialistic wealth – Sri Guru Granth Sahib page: 15

What a powerful statement to make, when associating with a low caste Shudra by a high caste was unheard of and when the food was considered spoiled even if the shadow of a Shudra falls upon it. When the humanity was divided into four different castes and each caste was treated differently just because they were borne into that caste. Guru Nanak slapped on the face of the caste ridden society by openly associating with a “low caste” Maraasi – Bhai Mardana. Another powerful statement in Guru Granth Sahib:

• Look at the internal characteristics of a person and don’t ask any one’s caste, status, or race. Your actions are the true reflection of your real caste or status.

Guru Nanak Dev ji himself collected the Baanee of the following “low caste” Bhagats – Kabir ji, Ravdass ji and Sain ji, which became part of Guru Granth Sahib Jee:

2. A VOICE TO DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF THE DOWNTRODDEN
In 1521, when the well equipped army of Babur attacked the poorly armed Pathan rulers of India and butchered thousands of innocent people, Guru Nanak spoke out and recorded the Baanee in Guru Granth Sahib:

• O Creator of the Universe, You belong to all. If a powerful foe overpowers another equally powerful power, I will have no reason to complain – Sri Guru Granth Sahib page: 360

• If a ferocious lion falls upon a herd of sheep then the master of the herd is held responsible (that is the reason for my appeal before You). These dogs (Moghul) have mercilessly butchered the jewel-like human beings and scattered them on the ground

A prayer for the entire humanity:

• O God, Have mercy on all living beings of the Universe and keep them under Your Care. O Lord, Fulfill the basic necessities of people, remove poverty and hunger from the earth, get rid of pain and sufferings and take them across this materialistic ocean. – Sri Guru Granth Sahib page: 1251

3. TAUGHT US THE WAY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS BY DISCUSSION

Discussions and debates were unheard of those days, when all the countries were ruled by dictators, autocrats and kings. Who could have imagined discussing the matter with the “most learned” Siddhas? Yes! It was Guru Nanak, who did it. He was asked some very tough questions to which he gave very short, precise and befitting in depth replies to the amazement of the most learned scholars. Here are some of the typical questions as well as their replies that are recorded in our Holy Scriptures:

• How the moon of peace and coolheaded-ness make its abode in human mind; How the sun of divine knowledge starts shining in our heart.

• The moon of coolheaded-ness resides in human heart and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled by keeping in mind the words of the Guru just like the darkness of moon is dispelled when the sunlight falls upon it – Sri Guru Granth Sahib 943

It was not known at that time that moon does not have any light

4. DESERVING SHOULD LEAD:

• Only that person should sit on the throne, who is fit for such an exalted position
– Sri Guru Granth Sahib 1088

It is very easy to issue a strong statement like this but it is extremely hard to put these words into action. Guru Nanak put his words into action by transferring the Guruship to the most deserving follower of his faith without caring for the reaction of the society. He had the courage to deviate from the prevailing tradition of passing on the Guruship to his sons. It is recorded on the page of Guru Granth Sahib in these words:

• Nanak, the Lord of the world through his utterly supreme words (of transferring guru-ship to his disciple) reversed the prevailing tradition and surprised everyone in the world. Indeed he has made the Ganges to flow from a different direction
– Sri Guru Granth Sahib 967

• Such a Great person was the husband of Mata Kheevi, who lifted the load of earth. His services were recognized by his Guru-Husband (Guru Nanak) because of his manly act.

• Guru Nanak displayed such great courage when he picked a great person like Angad
• He passed on the guru-ship to Lehna and extended the horizon of his glory to sky high.
– Sri Guru Granth Sahib 967

• Selecting a successor other than his own son or relative was unheard of those days

The Role of The Khalsa Panth

How should the words of wisdom contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib be interpreted? When Guru Gobind Singh ji gave Gurgaddi to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji making the Shabad Guru the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, he authorized the Khalsa Panth to be the interpreter of Gurbaani:

That is, my soul is in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and my body is in the Khalsa Panth. Just as the interpretation of law is handled by the people who are judges in the court of Law and hold a law degree, similarly the interpretation of Scriptures must also be handled by those who devotedly follow the path of their religion. In the Sikh religion, they are the Khalsa – The Guru Panth.

On one occasion just before the departure (of Guru Gobind Singh ji) the Sikhs assembled and asked this question: “Who will represent you?” The Guru replied: “I shall only be represented by the Khalsa.” “Only Khalsa is closest to me. I have blessed them the authority to represent me.”

Khalsa is my very self and I am close to the Khalsa. From the beginning to the end I reside in the Khalsa.

Only that person is my special Khalsa, who is free from any superstitions or illusions. The Khalsa, who is free from superstitions and falsehood, is, in fact, my True Guru.

There is dealing only among the Khalsa. Other (lesser) gods are false. Other (lesser) gods should be considered a handful of sand. I have created the Khalsa Panth on the orders of Almighty God. All Sikhs are directed to consider ‘Granth’ as the ‘Guru’. Consider the Guru Khalsa Panth as the embodiment of all the (10) Gurus. Any Sikh, who wants to unite with Me, should find the answers in these two, The Granth and The Panth.

The Guru’s first image is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the second form is the Khalsa Panth. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the Guru as Guru’s wisdom is contained in it. Khalsa Panth is the Guru as the collective wisdom of the Khalsa is needed not only to interpret the divine knowledge contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji but also to put it into practice. The Panth is the Guru as long as it functions according to the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

During the life of Ten Gurus, the Divine Word was revealed by God Almighty through the Gurus and the Guru’s interpreted and showed the ways to implement the Word. As Principal Teja Singh has pointed out in An Outline of Sikh Doctrines:

“Now after the death of Guru Gobind Singh ji, the personality and Word were separated. The Panth was invested with the personality of the Guru, and the incorporated Word became the Gyan Guru. That is, in simple words, the Khalsa Panth was to be the guru in future, not in super session of the previous Gurus, but as authorized to work in their name; and it was invariably to guide itself by the teachings of the Gurus as found in the Holy Granth. So the Sikhs came to name Guru Nanak and the Guru Panth in the same breath.”
