GURU GRANTH, THE SHABAD GURU AND GURU PANTH
By Kuldeep Singh
Chairperson, World Sikh Council – America Region
April 4, 2004

Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the present Guru of the Sikhs is perhaps the only holy Scripture of any religion which was compiled by the Sikh Gurus themselves. Its first compilation – Aad Granth Sahib is preserved to this day in its original form at Kartarpur in district Jullunder, Punjab. Under the direction of the fifth Nanak – Guru Arjan Sahib, the Aad Sri Granth Sahib was scribed by Bhai Gurdas ji and authenticated by the fifth Guru Himself. According to the Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a platter of spiritual food consisting of three important elements for human consumption.

The elements are – Truth, concord with Truth and the way to that Concord, the basis of all the three is Naam. They are most essential to quench the thirst of human beings. The entire world is lost in darkness and does not know the importance of following the Godly Path. Sri Guru Granth Sahib will provide them the food of divine knowledge and show them the path that will take them across this ocean of materialistic world.

Shabad Guru from the very beginning:

Right from the times of the first Nanak, Guru Nanak Sahib, it was emphasized that the Shabad or Baani (word) is the true guide (Guru) and not the body. In Sidh Gosht – A conversation with Sidhas as recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Nanak Sahib says:

What is the origin of life and what time it all began? Who is your Guru of whom you are a disciple? How do you stay aloof from the influence of Maya and ego? Listen young boy and answer our question. Elaborate on this question – the Shabad (word) is instrumental in taking us across the ocean of Maya?

The life began with the breath of life and the time it started following the instructions of the True Guru. The Shabad (word) is the Guru and an attentive mind attuned to it is the disciple. I stay aloof from the influence of Maya by staying in touch with the inexplicable story of the Creator. After attaining, a thorough understanding of the Shabad (word) and acting upon its guidance the fire of ego is extinguished.

Just as Guru Nanak Sahib considers Shabad as Guru, the second Nanak – Guru Angad Sahib also gives utmost importance to the Gurshabad in his baani:

Even though ego is curable, it is definitely a chronic disease. And its cure is to act upon Guru’s Word by the Grace of Waheguru-Akalpurakh. Nanak says this is the way to get rid of this trouble.

This pattern is the same throughout Guru Granth Sahib. All the Gurus have similarity of thought. This is observed even by the Bhatts who visited Guru Darbar during the times of Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Nanak. They found no difference between various Gurus. Their words are:

The spirit of God Almighty was called Guru Nanak. The same spirit became Angad just like the merger of two elements. Angad became merciful and granted Guruship to Amardas. Amardas handed over the umbrella of Amrit (Naam) to Ramdas. After coming to the sanctuary of Guru Ramdas, Mathura has these golden words to say. See with your own eyes Guru Arjan as the fifth body of Guru Nanak.

The words “Shabad” and “Surat” are so important and significant that Bhai Gurdas ji used them so frequently in his “Vaars” . In his Vaar # 3 given below, he used these words five times:

ñù॥

Baani came from God Almighty to the Guru

Entire Guru Granth Sahib is the Divine Word revealed to the Gurus by God Almighty as is clear from the following quotations:

O’ Lalo! I simply pass on the Word of God as it is revealed to me by Him

I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to speak. I conveyed whatever is told to me.

O’ Sikhs of the Guru, Always consider the Words coming out of the mouth of True Guru as Absolute Truth as they are revealed to him by Almighty God Himself.

Being present in the Guru, God Himself made His Word available to salvage the humankind.

The Aad Granth and its structure

Guru Arjan Sahib brought all the Baani that was in his possession and told Bhai Gurdas ji to scribe it into a certain specific order and compile it into a Granth called Aad Granth. After the compilation was complete and the Beerh of Aad Sri Granth Sahib was ready, it was installed at Sri Harmandar Sahib. The Guru, himself sat with the Sangat (members of the congregation). He addressed the Sangat thus as per Gurbilaas Patshahi Chheveen (Although this Granth is considered highly controversial yet it gives us an insight about a number of historical facts):

Listen carefully to my words that are full of truth. Treat the Granth as the Guru and make no distinction between the two (i.e. The Granth and the Guru).

At night, The Aad Sri Granth Sahib Ji was taken to Kotha Sahib and the Sukhasan was done on the bed where Guru Arjan Sahib used to sleep. The Guru, himself slept on the floor, thus paying greater respect to the Shabad/Baani.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib, as it is called now, is arranged in 31 different Ragas. Baani contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib is by first five Gurus, the ninth Guru, 15 Bhagats, 22 Bhats and three other important personalities. The message of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is uniform and there is no contradiction in the philosophy. Although the contributors of Sri Guru Granth Sahib came from diverse backgrounds, yet there is uniformity in the message. It provides general guidelines to a seeker of Truth. Mr. Duncan Greenlees, the author of “The Gospel of Guru Granth Sahib” has these words to say:

“Among the world’s Scriptures few, if any, attain so high a literary level or so constant a height of inspiration…… The more I dug into the pages of Guru Granth, the more I fell in love with them.”

After reading the English translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib by Dr. Gopal Singh, the Nobel Laureate, Ms. Pearl S. Buck has the following significant comments:
“I have studied the scriptures of other great religions, but I do not find elsewhere the same power of appeal to the heart and mind as I find here in these volumes……….There is something strangely modern about these scriptures and this puzzled me until I learned that they are in fact comparatively modern, compiled as late as the 16th century when explorers were beginning to discover that the globe , upon which we all live, is a single entity divided only by arbitrary lines of our own making. Perhaps this sense of unity is the source of power I find in these volumes. They speak to person of any religion or of none. They speak for the human heart and the searching mind.”

In the Chapter entitled “Mr. Book” in the Ripley’s third series of ‘Believe it or not’ published by Simon Schuster Inc. of New York, respect to the present Guru of the Sikhs is demonstrated although many other facts are twisted and misrepresented. Here is the quote from that series:

Most revered book in the world is the Granth Sahib (literally Mr. Book). It is the holy book of the Sikhs, a religious sect of India. This book is treated as though it were a living oriental King. It has a retinue of servants who fan it all day with golden handed fan of peacock feathers. An orchestra plays sweet music before it to banish boredom. Sweets are offered to it, continuously for its sustenance. The famous Golden Temple of Amritsar, center of the Sikh religious worship, was built for the express purpose of housing this book. The temple is of marble encased in heavily gild copper and cost 40,000,000 British pounds to build. It is the costliest book cover in the World.

Guruship to the Aad Sri Granth Sahib

When Guru Nanak was about to leave the body, he was asked:
“O True King, which will be your place of residence or when and where we will be able to have your vision?” The Guru replied:

Baba (Nanak) is neither in the cremation ground nor in the graveyard. He is present deep down in the heart of Guru Angad. He is always present in the gathering of saintly souls.

When the 10th Nanak Guru Gobind Singh left the human body to merge his soul with Waheguru-Akalpurakh, his words were very similar. His message was interpreted by various historians and poets in the following manner:

On the third day when the Guru stood in the midst of the Sangat, all the Sikhs met him with folded hands and made the following request to him. You have made up your mind to leave the world. Who will take care of the needs of the Sangat?

After listening to the request of the Sangat the merciful Guru replied: I am granting Guruship to such a person, who is the greatest of all. After saying these words, he had the “Parkash” of Guru Granth Sahib. He then placed five pennies and a coconut in front of the Granth. A Deg of Karah Parshad (Sweet Pudding) was prepared for distribution to all. He, then, addressed the Sikhs in this manner:

All the Gurus from Nanak to Gobind Singh have the spirit of Almighty God in them. And the same spirit is now present in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The Khalsa Panth was established by the orders of God. The entire Sikh Nation is hereby ordered to consider the Granth as the Guru. Consider the body of Guru Granth Jee as the body of all the Gurus. Any one who wishes to have union with God may find Him in the Shabad contained in Guru Granth Sahib.

Any one who wishes to talk to me may do so by reciting, listening and understanding the Granth Ji. Those who have a desire to listen to my words may do so by reading and listening to the Granth Ji from the bottom of one’s heart.

My shape and form is Granth Ji and that there is no flaw in this statement. My third form is those Sikhs, who are drenched in Gurbaani all the time.

Listen to me carefully O’ Nand Lal. I have a total of three forms. Nirgun, Sargun and the Word.

O Lord! You are planning to leave the world. Advise us as to where should we bow our head ?
Recite the Baani of all the Gurus and follow the code of conduct that was given to you.

From now on consider Guru Granth Sahib as my true form. If you want to talk to me, you should recite Aad Guru Granth Sahib. This is the way to talk to me.

The evidence of installing the Aad Sri Granth Sahib as ‘Guru” is witnessed in the Bhatt Vahis of Thanesar in the following words:

Guru Gobind Singh ji, the Tenth Guru, son of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, grandson of Guru Hargobind ji, great-grandson of Guru Arjun ji, belonging to the family of Guru Ramdas ji, Surajbansi Gosal clan, Sodhi, Khatri, resident of Anandpur, Parganah Kahlur, now at Nanderh, in the country of Godavri in Deccan(South) asked Bhai Daya Singh, on Wednesday, the Chauth of Katrik month, shukla Pakh, samvat 1765 (October 6, 1708) to bring Sri Granth Sahib. After receiving orders Daya Singh brought Sri Granth Sahib.Guru ji placed five pennies and a coconut before it and bowed his head. He addressed the Sangat thus: “This is my order to you. Consider Sri Granth Ji as the Guru in my place. Any Sikh who will acknowledge this shall be rewarded. The Guru will stand by his/her side.” He emphasized that these words are true.”

The Guru Panth

How the words of wisdom contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib should be interpreted? When the tenth Nanak – Guru Gobind Singh ji gave Gurgaddi to Sri Guru Granth Sahib by eliminating the body completely and making the Shabad Guru the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, he authorized the Khalsa Panth to be the interpreter of Gurbaani. His words somehow convey the following meaning: “Atma Granth vich Sareer Panth vich” that is my soul is in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and my body is in the Khalsa Panth. Just as the interpretation of law is handled by the people who are judges in the court of Law and hold a law degree, similarly the interpretation of Scriptures must also be handled by those who devotedly follow the path of their religion. In case of Sikh religion, they are the Khalsa – The Guru Panth.

eyk idvs kwrn qy Awgy [ imil kr isMG pUCny lwgy ]

“Kwlsy hI so hY mm kwmw [ bKs ikXo Kwls ko jwmw” ]41]806]
– sRI guru soBw gRMQ, kiv sYnwpiq s&w 132

On one occasion just before the departure (of Guru Gobind Singh ji) the Sikhs assembled and asked this question: “Who will represent you?” The Guru replied: “I shall only be represented by the Khalsa.” “Only Khalsa is closest to me. I have blessed them the authority to represent me.”

Khalsa is my very self and I am close to the Khalsa. From the beginning to the end I reside in the Khalsa.

Only that person is my special Khalsa, who is free from any superstitions or illusions. The Khalsa, who is free from superstitions and falsehood, is, in fact, my True Guru.

There is dealing only between the Khalsa and other lesser gods have nothing to do with it. Other gods are like a handful of sand. I have created Khalsa Panth on the orders of Almighty God. It is the duty of all Sikhs to consider ‘Granth’ as the ‘Guru’. Do consider the Guru Khalsa Panth as the embodiment of all the (10) Gurus. Any Sikh, who wants to get united with me should search in these (two).

Guru’s first image is Guru Granth Sahib and the second shape is Khalsa Panth. Guru Granth Sahib is the Guru as Guru’s wisdom is contained in it. Khalsa Panth is the Guru as the collective wisdom of the Khalsa is needed not only to interpret the divine knowledge contained in the Guru Granth Sahib but also to put it into practice. Panth is the Guru as long as it functions according to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.

During the life of Ten Gurus, the Divine Word was revealed by God Almighty through the Gurus and the Guru’s interpreted and showed the ways and means to implement the Word. As Principal Teja Singh has very rightly pointed out in following words in his book – An Outline of Sikh Doctrines:

“ Now after the death of Guru Gobind Singh ji, the personality and Word were separated. The Panth was invested with the personality of the Guru, and the incorporated Word became the Gyan Guru. That is, in simple words, the Khalsa Panth was to be the guru in future, not in super session of the previous Gurus, but as authorized to work in their name; and it was invariably to guide itself by the teachings of the Gurus as found in the Holy Granth. So the Sikhs came to name Guru Nanak and the Guru Panth in the same breath.”
